Q.

Is all fish roe edible?

Trackback |
A.

We can’t say.  There are probably varieties that, while technically edible, aren’t considered tasty.  There may even be varieties that are unsafe to eat for one reason or another.  There are simply too many types of fish roe out there to say for sure.

If you reply in the comments below with specific varieties you’re curious about, we can try to supply a better answer.

Gar roe is said to be toxic. Some minnows, catfishes, sticklebacks (to small to get much roe off of) and tetrodonts (boxfish and puffers) may also produce poisonous roe.

I suspect you did a google search to ask the question. The better way to do it would be to search (like me) for the converse. Ask if some fish eggs are toxic, and if they are then you have your answer.

    Hi Jenna,

Sorry I didn’t see your comment earlier. It looks like the blog’s comment notification system hasn’t been pinging me properly for the last couple of months.

I’ve done some looking, and I’m afraid I can’t find anything on whether porgy eggs are edible. In other words, you’ve stumped me 🙁 Sorry I wasn’t able to help!
