Can you freeze parmigiano reggiano and/or gruyere?

Generally freezing cheese isn’t something we recommend because its texture will suffer. However, from what we’ve read, very hard cheeses like parmigiano reggiano and gruyere will freeze better than other varieties.

We haven’t tested this ourselves, but people are saying these cheeses will keep frozen (tightly wrapped in plastic) for several months. They will apparently be somewhat “mealy” when thawed, and won’t be suited to serving on cheese plates, slicing for sandwiches, etc. They say thawed cheese is better cooked in dishes (melted into sauces, baked in pasta dishes, etc) so that its texture isn’t a factor.
